I occasionally get approached by security guards when I’m out and about with my camera. Yesterday, I was attracted by the form of and the light on this empty and rather grubby office building. As I began shooting, and waiting for the right person to fill the gap, a suited gentlemen approached and asked what I was doing. My reaction to this question is always ‘I’m a professional photographer, and I am photographing ‘your building’ because I like the look of it’. This normally takes them by surprise as often what I’m photographing is not conventionally beautiful. In this instance, the security guy was courteous and made it clear that he knew he had no power to stop me, but wanted to do his job. Thats fine by me, but it still irritates me that a camera, and the person using it, is seen as a potential problem.
